Recent exploits

Wow, here it is already — almost the end of October. For anyone following my projects, here's the latest:

CJSW 90.9 FM Calgary Funding Drive

I spend quite a bit of time at CJSW doing a combination of web jobs and working on Hotbox Radio in their studios. Recently, I was asked to set up an online donation system for their funding drive (Ongoing until Friday, Oct. 29), the result of which is at donate.cjw.com. I used a combination of Drupal, jQuery and CiviCRM to produce an intuitive workflow allowing donators to contribute while giving CJSW staff an effective and user-friendly interface for delivering contributor incentives. I ended up coding a new Drupal module to allow for a $10 shipping option in CiviContribute; if somebody needs a handling fee or shipping cost option in CiviCRM Contribute pages, drop me a line, I may release the code after the funding drive if there's any interest.

CJSW's an absolutely fantastic station and some of the best radio I've encountered not only in Calgary, but damn near anywhere. They have all of their streams available online, in addition to some top-rated podcast content. I helped with the municipal election website and it had more interviews with more candidates than any other media group in the city. If you live in Calgary, seriously consider donating at least $25 for the Friends of CJSW Card, which pays itself off in about two uses. Regardless, if you believe in the importance of public radio, donating a few bucks during CJSW's funding drive is a karmatically-positive thing all around.

mod_jea_anythingslider 0.1.1

I think it's safe to say I got a little bit over my head with the first open source project I released, the mod_jea_anythingslider. Not only was it the first time I'd actually coded a modular piece of Joomla! code, but it was also one of the first pieces of jQuery code I'd ever used.

Well, fast forward about six jQuery projects and the project seems pretty simplistic now. I've updated the code to prevent jQuery from conflicting with Mootools and now everything should work much better. If there's any interest in this code, I'll add a few more options and release a second version. See it in action at Barry Commercial.

Hotbox News

I've been trying to produce Hotbox Radio on a biweekly basis, but it seems I'm having difficulty meeting my Saturday evening deadline. I've also produced nearly no content whatsoever for Hotbox Magazine in the process, and am thus thinking I may move it to a monthly release schedule. I could seriously use a co-host or associate producer at this point. If you live in Calgary and want to do wicked-awesome radio stuff, please drop me a line!

Calgary Municipal Election Google Map

I searched a bunch for a good ward boundary map for the upcoming election and, finding only the really weak drawing given by the City of Calgary, decided to try and convert that into a more usable format...

mod_jea_AnythingSlider 0.1alpha --RELEASE

Jquery-based Tabbed Slideshow Module for Joomla Estate Agency (com_jea)

Readme and Release Notes for 0.1alpha:

(c) 2010 Ændrew Rininsland -- http://aendrew.com
Builds on work by (c) 2008 Philip Sylvain and (c) 2010 Chris Coyier.
Distributed under the GNU Public License, see: http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html
All rights reserved.

Release notes:

This is the first release of a rotating featured property carousal for Philip Sylvain's com_jea component. It builds on Sylvain's mod_jea_emphasis code by adding Chris Coyier's AnythingSlider Jquery plugin. See: http://css-tricks.com/examples/AnythingSlider/

This is the first release of this. Some functionality is still missing (most notably things like slideshow dimensions); I'll add this in the next version, likely in a day or two once I get some initial feedback. Also, the initial size it set to about 300 pixels squared. Modify the first three style definitions in /modules/mod_jea_AnythingSlider/mod_jea_AnythingSlider.css to change this.

This is my first attempt at developing a module and any feedback whatsoever would be appreciated.

I can be reached at aendrew [at] aendrew [dot] com.

http://aendrew.com

ToDos:

+ Change Jquery easing types to a dropdown instead of a textfield

+ Add the ability to easily change width/height of slider from module

=> To change size presently, edit: mod_jea_AnythingSlider.css

+ Potentially add other slier styles for future releases.

+ Flesh out the French translation

REQUEST AND CAVEAT:
This is the first module I've EVER released. PLEASE get back to me with issues, feature requests and bug reports so I can improve it! Also, please don't be surprised if something's broken! Thanks!

Thanks to Katalyst Events for putting on a wicked show, as well as to Shpongle et al for not getting annoyed about how much flash I had to use!

Why I Support Cannabis Legalization

In using this as a centralized aggregate of my online identity, I'm aware I run the danger of being labeled a fairly significant pothead by people I haven't talk to for a while or are simply Googling my name. The reality is that much of the effort I exert online is related to the fight against cannabis prohibition in some form or another, though my reasons for that are probably not what you'd expect...

About

I am Ændrew Rininsland, and ændrew.com is my attempt to bring together all the random pieces of cyber identity I have into one useful place. I do about three different productive things online: I blog random philosophical thoughts I have, I publish my photo, video, audio and code, and I also use the web as a development platform for the various nerdy things I do.
